The story behind
The raw energy of Wah‐Wah, with its 5:38 duration, seems to be born out of a particular urgency. George Harrison composed it during a period of intense musical activity, following the dissolution of The Beatles in April 1970. This track, along with other pieces like Isn't It a Pity, was part of his first major solo project, the triple album All Things Must Pass, which was released in November of that same year. The recording featured the collaboration of producer Phil Spector, and the sound of the slide guitar, which would become a distinctive mark of Harrison's, already begins to emerge strongly in this piece.
This solo work was nourished by the experiences shared by Harrison with musicians such as Bob Dylan, The Band, Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, and Billy Preston between 1968 and 1970. It was a time when Harrison was exploring his own artistic voice, beyond his role within The Beatles alongside John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The album, and by extension Wah‐Wah, reflected this growth and the incorporation of spiritual themes that would characterize his later work.
