The story behind

Voto latino, according to DoReSol

The first time *Voto Latino* was heard was in November 1996, and it marked the beginning of Molotov in the music scene. This song, which would later appear on their debut studio album, *¿Dónde jugarán las niñas?* (1997), emerged as a wake-up call. What’s interesting is that, initially, it wasn’t planned as a standalone release but rather as part of the full album.

From its conception, *Voto Latino* was intended as a way to address racism, both from an individual experience and a collective perspective. The goal was to raise social and political awareness, promoting equity among different ethnic groups. With a duration of 2 minutes and 58 seconds, this track became a reference point. Later, the political party Morena used it in one of their campaigns, leading the band to file a complaint over the unauthorized use of their music in that context. The production of this album, *¿Dónde jugarán las niñas?*, was handled by Gustavo Santaolalla and Aníbal Kerpel, and it was released by Universal Music Group. This work, which came out in 1997, not only achieved international success in sales and critical acclaim but also sparked debate due to the strength of its lyrics and the impact of its cover art, directly criticizing Mexico’s political system of the time with a style reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine.
