The story behind
Un alma en pena, according to DoReSol
This short but intense song Un alma en pena carries a raw sound that reflects the moment it was born. Mon Laferte recorded it in her own home, without stable electricity, using an extension cord plugged into the building’s parking lot to power the equipment. Cars passing by sometimes unplugged everything, but that didn’t stop the recording. The result is a track that sounds like raw truth, unfiltered by studio polish, with a voice that conveys what the lyrics don’t say.The album Mon Laferte, vol. 1 was released in August 2015, following two independent works in Mexico: Desechable and Tornasol. Mon Laferte sought to reclaim the sound of her childhood, the one she listened to with her grandmother, and she achieved it in this record.
The sessions took place amid a period of depression, which is evident in songs like Tormento or Tu falta de querer. Un alma en pena lasts only two minutes and twenty-three seconds, but within that time, it encapsulates the full emotional weight of a difficult moment.
