The story behind
The first time I heard Tormento, it was clear it wasn’t just any song: Mon Laferte wrote it during a moment of emotional calm, but her life took a sudden turn that ended up reflecting in the lyrics. What’s curious is that the artist considers it “premonitory,” as if she had anticipated what was to come. The song was born as the lead single from Mon Laferte Vol. 1, recorded under extreme conditions: no money, no electricity at home, and using an extension cord in the parking lot to power the equipment. The song has a raw quality, as if every note carried the tension between what was lived and what was written.
The official release was on January 31, 2015, though it had already been performed live in 2014. The video, directed by Carolina Dagach and inspired by the artist Marina Abramović, shows Mon Laferte subjected to scenes of humiliation and self-flagellation, ending with a shocking image of her naked beside a skeleton. The song even reached position 16 on the Chile Singles Chart in 2017, following her performance at the Viña del Mar Festival. Later, in 2018, she performed it with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra at the Chile en mi corazón concert by Plácido Domingo. Exact duration: 4 minutes and 37 seconds.
