The story behind

The idea behind Enrique Iglesias's Turn the Night Up stems from something everyday and personal. The artist shared that the phrase "Gimme some of that," which appears in the lyrics, is something he often says jokingly at home, sometimes accompanied by a little dance. His girlfriend, Anna Kournikova, used to laugh at these occurrences, and that reaction inspired Iglesias to bring that spark to a song. Thus, the composition was built around that phrase, seeking to capture that fun and slightly playful energy. Musically, it falls within dance-pop and EDM, following a sonic line he had already explored in previous singles like Finally Found You and Tonight (I'm Fuckin' You). The production was handled by The Cataracs, who worked on giving it that characteristic danceable and electronic pulse.

The release of Turn the Night Up was announced on July 22, 2013, when Enrique Iglesias presented it on Elvis Duran's radio show in New York. This track became the first single from his tenth studio album, Sex and Love, which would be released later. Iglesias described the song as "one of those powerful, fun, and energetic pieces," and shared his personal validation process: "Once I write a song... I go to sleep, I wake up in the morning, and I listen to it. If it feels good, if it puts me in a good mood, that's when I know there's something special." The song, written by Iglesias himself along with Niles Hollowell-Dhar, Marty James, and Rome Ramirez, reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in the United States during the fall of 2013.
