The story behind
When you listen to Trátame Suavemente, you encounter a piece that stands out quite a bit from the path that Soda Stereo would build later. This track, with music by Daniel Melero, is part of their first album, released in August 1984. What's interesting about this debut album is that it has a different feel, almost as if it were a separate chapter in their history. The lyrics of that time played with humor and irony, something that was very present in the Argentine music scene of the early '80s. Soda Stereo, along with bands like Los Twist and Virus, were part of that "fun music" movement. That's why this first work has a sound and vibe that move away from what would come later, where the band would explore other textures. The song's duration is 3:23, a length that allows its particular atmosphere to develop.
This trio, formed by Gustavo Cerati on vocals and guitar, Héctor "Zeta" Bosio on bass and backing vocals, and Charly Alberti on drums, began to forge a sound influenced by the new wave of bands like The Police and Virus, and even by the post-punk of Television. The production of this first album was handled by Federico Moura, leader of Virus. It was a starting point that, while differentiating itself from their later work, laid the foundation for the sound that would make them known throughout Ibero-America in the following decades.
