The story behind

The song Traccia II by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso is one of those moments that catches you off guard and lingers. At just two minutes and thirty-nine seconds, it sounds like a sketch they kept in the drawer, but when you listen to it today, it doesn’t feel like a rough draft at all. It’s as if the track had escaped from a long, dense rehearsal, carrying that contained energy that some pieces have when they’re born without aiming to be great. The air it breathes is that of Italian progressive rock from the seventies, but with a twist that makes it instantly recognizable: that bass that weaves into the keyboard and the drums marking a rhythm that never quite settles.

They recorded it in Rome at a time when the local scene was buzzing with bands like Area or Premiata Forneria Marconi, and although Banco del Mutuo Soccorso already had a couple of albums under their belt, this track in particular feels like it came from a session where what mattered wasn’t the final result, but the sound that came out of the instruments. Vittorio Nocenzi composed the music, and together with Francesco Di Giacomo, they gave lyrics to a fragment that, decades later, Rolling Stone magazine would include in its list of the fifty best prog rock albums of all time. No need to overthink it: sometimes, the small things best sum up what came after.
