The story behind

The first time I heard Todo amor que houver nessa vida, I was left with the feeling that it wasn’t just any song. There’s something about it that makes it sound more intimate than the rest of the songs Cazuza composed with Barão Vermelho: that clean, almost acoustic guitar opening, which builds up layer by layer until it bursts into a chorus that doesn’t ask permission to stay in your head. It’s not a song that sounds like typical Brazilian rock from the 80s; it’s something more universal, as if the love it describes could fit into any language. The lyrics, for their part, don’t get lost in convoluted metaphors: they go straight to the point, with phrases that seem written in a notebook or on a bar napkin in Janeiro at three in the morning.

It was recorded in 1990, the same year Cazuza passed away, but the song doesn’t sound like a forced farewell. Instead, it feels like a gift he left behind before leaving: he wrote it with Roberto Frejat, his songwriting partner in Barão Vermelho, and although the album Vermelho had already been in stores for months, this track ended up being one of the most remembered. It lasts just over two and a half minutes, yet those seconds were enough for it to become a song that still plays on the radio and at tribute concerts, as if time hadn’t taken its toll. There are no awards or records in its technical sheet, but one listen is enough to understand why it’s still here, alive, just like the love it promises.
