The story behind
three little birds, according to DoReSol
There is a moment in Exodus where the air fills with something more than just notes: it is the instant when Three Little Birds becomes that sonic embrace everyone recognizes immediately. It is not just the repetition of the chorus —"Every little thing gonna be alright"— that hooks you, but how the guitar riff, light and repetitive, sways over a rhythmic foundation that seems unwilling to let go. The song does not speak of storms or chaos; it speaks of calm, of that certainty that sometimes arrives when you least expect it. And although the title mentions birds, the magic lies in the fact that it does not matter if they are metaphors, memories, or simple birds perched on a windowsill on Hope Road: the song works just the same.
It was recorded by Bob Marley and his band in 1977, but the song was not born as an anthem. According to Tony Gilbert, a friend of the composer, the inspiration came from canaries that frequently visited Marley’s house in Jamaica. Other versions, such as that of the I Threes — the vocal trio that accompanied him — suggest the name was a nod to them. What is certain is that the song slipped into Exodus as the fourth track on side two, and when it was released as a single in 1980, it climbed to position 17 on the UK charts. Its structure in A major and that endless guitar loop give it an eternal air, as if it had always been there. Even years later, in 1992, Monty Alexander gave it a jazzy twist in his version, yet without losing the original essence.
