Recorded in Jamaica by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and his brother Stephen Marley, the track was born in the same climate as the rest of the album Welcome to Jamrock, released in September 2005. The song wasn’t an immediate hit, but two years later, in 2006, the Grammy Awards recognized it with two awards: one for Best Reggae Album and another for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, the latter specifically for Welcome to Jamrock. Though the album features guests like Black Thought, Bobby Brown, and Nas, There for You doesn’t rely on them: its strength lies in the rhythmic foundation and that voice that sways between confidence and melancholy.
