The story behind

There for You, according to DoReSol

The hook of There for You isn’t in the chorus, but in that rhythm that coils between the bass and the drums, as if the track breathes in two distinct tempos. It’s not just any loop: there’s a tension that doesn’t resolve until the vocals kick in, and then the song unfolds like a fan. The lyrics don’t explain; they suggest — they speak of being present without asking for anything in return, and that simple yet direct message is what keeps the track from sounding like traditional reggae, instead leaning into something closer to dancehall with roots firmly planted in Jamaica. The runtime, four minutes and forty-one seconds, is spot-on: neither drawn out nor cut short, as if every note has its exact place in the puzzle.

Recorded in Jamaica by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and his brother Stephen Marley, the track was born in the same climate as the rest of the album Welcome to Jamrock, released in September 2005. The production was handled by both, capitalizing on their chemistry of always working together, but here the result feels more organic: Errol Brown’s mix lends it that warm glow, making the instruments sound as if they’re in the same room. The song wasn’t an immediate hit, but two years later, in 2006, the Grammy Awards recognized it with two awards: one for Best Reggae Album and another for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, the latter specifically for Welcome to Jamrock. Though the album features guests like Black Thought, Bobby Brown, and Nas, There for You doesn’t rely on them: its strength lies in the rhythmic foundation and that voice that sways between confidence and melancholy.
