The recording of this album, which spanned eight months at the One on One studios in Los Angeles, was an intense process. Metallica, formed in 1981 in that same city by Dane Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield, was at a moment of musical evolution. After the departure of initial members and the subsequent exit of Dave Mustaine, who would found Megadeth, and the tragic loss of Cliff Burton in 1986, the band consolidated its lineup with Kirk Hammett and Jason Newsted, and later Robert Trujillo.
