The story behind

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, according to DoReSol

The music accompanying The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, composed by Ennio Morricone, begins with a constant rhythmic pattern that serves as a base. Then, a two-note melody unfolds, evoking the sound of a howling coyote. This is followed by other sonic elements that are said to represent the characters and central ideas of the film. This instrumental piece is heard at the beginning of the movie. The main theme of the soundtrack, due to its distinctive character, helped the album reach number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and remain there for over a year.

Ennio Morricone's relationship with director Sergio Leone solidified from the 1960s onwards. Leone, impressed by a musical arrangement by Morricone, commissioned him to compose the music for one of his films, A Fistful of Dollars. This collaboration led them to work together on other Leone films, which over time became known as "Spaghetti Westerns". The version by Hugo Montenegro, an American composer and conductor, was released in 1968 and had notable success in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is said that the recording of this version took place in a single day, a Saturday at RCA, with session musicians attempting to recreate the original piece with their own instrumentation. This adaptation used instruments such as the ocarina for the initial notes, harmonica for the subsequent sounds, and included whistles and other vocal effects. Montenegro's version reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1968, and remained at the top of the Billboard Easy Listening chart for three weeks. In the United Kingdom, it reached number one on the singles chart in November 1968, staying there for four weeks.
