The story behind

The Dark of the Matinée, according to DoReSol

The story told by "The Dark of the Matinée" takes us on a mental journey, to that fantasy of a better life as one walks home from school. It's as if the narrator imagines telling their dreams to someone on television, only for the idea itself to crumble due to how unrealistic it turns out to be. The title and the idea for the chorus came from a comment by bassist, Bob Hardy, who suggested that the dim light of a matinée performance offered an almost utopian setting for playing. The music video reinforces this atmosphere, showing the band as if they were schoolchildren, moving almost automatically, as if possessed, while lip-syncing the lead vocals. This aesthetic was inspired by the works of Dennis Potter, such as his television play Blue Remembered Hills (1979), where adults played children, and by the use of lip-syncing in his musical series like Pennies from Heaven (1978) and The Singing Detective (1986). Elsewhere in the video, the band appears dressed in white in front of a large photograph of Terry Wogan, who is mentioned in the lyrics.

This song is part of the self-titled debut album by Franz Ferdinand, released on February 9, 2004, through Domino Recording Company. The recording took place in 2003 at Gula Studios in Malmö, Sweden, under the production of Tore Johansson, who was responsible for most of the tracks, while the band handled two of them. The debut album debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart in February 2004. Several singles were released from this work that reached prominent positions, including "Take Me Out," which reached number three, and "The Dark of the Matinée," which reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart on April 19, 2004. In Australia, the song ranked 50th on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2004. The album Franz Ferdinand was recognized with the Mercury Prize in 2004 and received a nomination for Best Alternative Album at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards. The composers of "The Dark of the Matinée" are Alex Kapranos, Nick McCarthy, and Bob Hardy.
