The story behind

Sure to Fall, according to DoReSol

The first time you hear Sure to Fall by Carl Perkins, you're stuck with that guitar riff that repeats like a heartbeat, but it's no ordinary loop: it has a playful, almost mocking air that gives the rockabilly a unique twist. It's not just a love song, but a game of trust and mischief where the lyrics sound like a promise that comes true, but with a wink. The song moves fast, in two and a half minutes, and every note seems designed to make the listener feel that rhythm that makes your feet move without being able to help it. It's one of those recordings where the raw, direct sound of the fifties feels more real than in many polished studio albums.

Carl Perkins recorded it at Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, in the mid-fifties, when rockabilly was still a new shout on the radio. He wasn't trying to sound perfect, but authentic: the energy of a live performance, with mistakes included, is what gives it that "here and now" flavor that still sounds fresh today. Later, artists like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, or Johnny Cash covered it, but Perkins' original has that something only achieved when the music comes from a moment when the artist isn't thinking about the future, only the present. The song is also part of his legacy in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 1998 it received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
