The story behind
Movie Magg, according to DoReSol
The song Movie Magg stands out for its nostalgic narrative, inspired by the real life of Carl Perkins and his girlfriend Maggie, who used to go to the movies riding Perkins' mule, named Becky. This rockabilly single, released on March 15, 1955, captures the essence of those simple and happy moments, reflecting the reality of a young man who, due to his economic situation, could not take his partner in a car. The story told in the song is a reminder of the creativity and adaptability that arise from limitations.
Recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, Movie Magg was released under the Flip Records label, a subsidiary of Sun. This release took place in a context where Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun, preferred not to have two artists, such as Elvis Presley and Perkins, competing in the same market. Despite not being released under the Sun label, the song became a rockabilly classic. The production was handled by Phillips, who had also worked with other major names in music. With a duration of 2:12, this piece not only showcases Perkins' compositional skill, as he wrote it at the age of thirteen, but has also been performed by several artists over the years, including Paul McCartney on his 1999 album Run Devil Run.
