The story behind

The song Summer and Lightning, with its 4 minutes and 13 seconds duration, is part of a broader conceptual work within the album Out of the Blue. This piece is framed within what was called The Concerto for a Rainy Day, an anthology of songs that, together, aim to evoke a particular sonic experience. The sound of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) at this stage, and particularly on this album, was characterized by notable experimentation, being one of the first works to extensively incorporate the use of the vocoder, a technology that helped popularize in pop music.

The gestation of Out of the Blue, and therefore of Summer and Lightning, was due to a creative torrent from Jeff Lynne. The band's leader wrote the entirety of the album in just three and a half weeks, secluded in a rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. After this intense composition phase, the recording took place in Munich over two months. The result was a double album that became one of the group's most successful, reaching a figure of around 10 million copies sold worldwide by 2007. The production of this work, like the composition, was handled by Jeff Lynne, with Mack as the recording engineer.
