The story behind
When Lionel Richie decided to explore a different sound for his second album, Can't Slow Down, recorded in 1983, *Stuck on You* emerged. This piece, released as the fourth single in June 1984 under the Motown label, is distinguished by its clear country-pop influence, moving away from the R&B that characterized much of his work. The magazine Cash Box described it as a "tender and solid ballad, with an almost country feel." This stylistic turn marked Richie's debut in country music, something that was even reflected in the image on the single's cover, where he appears wearing a cowboy hat. Despite this foray, the song reached number three in the United States and 12 in the United Kingdom, in addition to topping the Adult Contemporary chart, consolidating it as his seventh number one in that category.
The composition and production of *Stuck on You* were handled by Lionel Richie himself, who collaborated with James Anthony Carmichael as arranger and co-producer. The single, with an approximate duration of three minutes and ten seconds, had *Round and Round* as its B-side. In 2003, the track was reinterpreted by the American group 3T, becoming the first single from their album Identity. This version, which also included a "Smooth Mix," was well-received in countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, where it ranked among the top ten most listened-to songs.
