The composition of Penny Lover is a collaborative effort between Lionel Richie and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey-Richie. Upon its release as a single, it reached eighth place on the US charts, being his least commercially successful single up to that point. Despite this, the song performed well in other markets: it reached 18th place on the UK Singles Chart and number 12 in Canada. On the Billboard charts, it ranked eighth on the R&B Chart and, notably, topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart for four weeks. Penny Lover has also been included in various Richie compilations, and other artists have recorded their own versions.
