The story behind
The story of *Strange Relationship* is a journey that goes through several canceled projects before finding its definitive place. Originally, the song was recorded by Prince in 1982, a period of great creativity for him. However, it did not see the light of day immediately, remaining stored in his archive.
The piece was revisited in 1985, with the collaboration of Wendy and Lisa, who added a particular nuance with influences evoking sounds from India. It was intended for the *Dream Factory* project, which ultimately did not materialize. After the dissolution of The Revolution, the *Dream Factory* album was discarded, but Prince kept *Strange Relationship*. He reworked it once more, this time for the *Camille* album, which was also canceled. Most of the tracks from *Camille*, including this song, ended up being integrated into an ambitious three-vinyl project called *Crystal Ball*, which was scheduled for release in late 1986.
However, the record label Warner Bros. asked Prince to reduce the album from three to two vinyls. This cut led to Sign o' the Times, an album that finally included the official version of *Strange Relationship*. In this final edition, the Eastern influences were considerably toned down, with the sitar and wooden flute integrated more subtly into the mix. A live performance of the song was released as a digital single in March 2005 through Prince's website.
