The story behind
Play in the Sunshine, according to DoReSol
When you dive into Play in the Sunshine, you encounter a track that, according to Susan Rogers, was created with surprising agility. It wasn't a central theme or a single intended for the general public, but rather a composition that served to complete the sonic landscape of an album. Prince, with his characteristic vision, sometimes created tracks specifically to fit into a record's sequence, acting as bridges between the more prominent songs. Thus, Play in the Sunshine occupies that space, a piece that complements the whole, with a duration of 5:05. The instrumental base was recorded between November 26th and 28th, 1986, at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. Interestingly, this session coincided with Susannah Melvoin's last day of recording with Prince, and the same day details were being added to It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. All of this happened just eight days before the album Crystal Ball was ready. The intro connecting Sign O’ The Times to Play in the Sunshine was recorded on January 15th, 1987, also at Sunset Sound. A reference to Shave And A Haircut can be heard in the song.
Prince Rogers Nelson, known simply as Prince, once again demonstrated his prowess by performing all the instruments and lead vocals on Play in the Sunshine. The backing vocals were provided by Susannah Melvoin. Sound engineering was handled by Susan Rogers and Coke Johnson. This track is part of Prince's ninth album, Sign O’ The Times, occupying the second position on the first disc. Prince, born in Minneapolis in 1958, was a pivotal figure in music, exploring genres such as rock, soul, and funk, and is credited with creating the so-called "Minneapolis sound." His career, which included a period where he used an unpronounceable symbol as his stage name, established him as one of the most influential artists of the 1980s.
