The story behind
The song Housequake, which appears as the third track on the first disc of Sign O' The Times, has a rather peculiar recording history. The bulk of the basic instrumentation was recorded in a single day, October 18, 1986, at Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood, California. Curiously, this date coincided with the day after the public announcement of The Revolution's dissolution. Shortly after, on October 26 of that same year, additional sound layers were added, including those vocals that evoke a festive atmosphere, also at Sunset Sound.
Prince, who handled all the vocals —playing the role of Camille— and most of the instruments, had a clear vision regarding the originality of Housequake. He himself commented that, while he could replicate other musical styles, there were pieces like this one that were unique. Several musicians and collaborators participated in the recording, contributing from saxophone with Eric Leeds and trumpet with Atlanta Bliss, to a variety of "party vocals" by Gilbert Davison, Coke Johnson, Todd Herreman, Susan Rogers, Mike Soltys, and Brad Marsh. Sound engineering was handled by Coke Johnson and Susan Rogers. This song also had an additional record release, appearing as the B-side of the third single from the album, U Got The Look.
