The story behind
The story behind Starfish and Coffee, a track found on Prince's album Sign o' the Times, stems from a very particular anecdote. It involves Cynthia Rose, a girl who attended the same school as Susannah and Wendy Melvoin. Cynthia was often overlooked by her peers, but Susannah felt a special curiosity about her and was interested in learning more about her world. When Cynthia was asked what she had for breakfast, her answer was usually "starfish and pee pee." Susannah, intrigued by this combination, realized that for many of the children in her class, this was a point of disconnect, as they showed no interest in understanding where this peculiar morning choice came from. She, on the other hand, found it endearing and amusing, and enjoyed listening to Cynthia talk about whatever she pleased, whether it was something earthly or from her own universe, where she loved numbers and drawing smiley faces.
Prince was so captivated by this story that he felt the need to transform it into music. The only condition was that the phrase "pee pee" had to be replaced with another word, and thus "coffee" emerged. Susannah agreed, and after putting down on paper what Cynthia had told her, Prince headed to his home studio to start recording. To achieve that magical and unique atmosphere that the lyrics evoke, harp sounds were created using synthesizers, and the initial drum kit was complemented by an LM-1 drum loop played backward. After dedicating ten hours of work alongside engineer Susan Rogers, she woke Susannah up to listen to the piece. Prince, with a smile, simply said, "Here it is." Both were delighted with the result, and the song remained part of the album's configurations until its release in March 1987. The recording took place in April 1986 at the Galpin Blvd. Home Studio. Later, this same story would inspire Susannah to create a website with the same name, dedicated to the creation of the song, where merchandise is sold and drawings by Cynthia Rose and herself are exhibited.
