The story behind

The song Standin’ in the Rain, with its 4 minutes and 20 seconds duration, is one of the pieces that make up the double album Out of the Blue by the Electric Light Orchestra. This work, released in October 1977, became one of the group's most successful, reaching sales of around 10 million copies worldwide by 2007. What's interesting about this album is that Jeff Lynne, the band's leader, composed all the material in just three and a half weeks, following a moment of inspiration while he was isolated in the Swiss Alps. The subsequent recording, which lasted two months, took place in Munich. Out of the Blue is also remembered for being one of the first pop albums to prominently use the vocoder, helping to popularize this sound effect.

Jeff Lynne was not only the main composer and producer of Standin’ in the Rain and the rest of the album, but he also handled the recording engineering alongside Mack. The Electric Light Orchestra, originally from Birmingham, England, was formed with the idea of fusing rock with classical elements. Although Roy Wood was part of its beginnings, Lynne took the reins of the project, defining its sound. Despite the band having a great impact in the United Kingdom, their popularity skyrocketed in the United States, becoming one of the best-selling groups. Between 1971 and 1986, their most active period, they released eleven albums and accumulated numerous singles on the charts, setting a Billboard record for the number of songs in the top 40 without reaching number one.
