The story behind
There are songs that are not just listened to, but inhabited. S.S. dei naufragati is one of them: an eight-minute journey where time seems to stand still between waves of accordions, pianos whispering, and a voice that navigates between the epic and the intimate. It is not just any track from the album Ovunque proteggi, but one of those cuts that defines an entire record, with a duration that invites you to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away by its hypnotic atmosphere. The title itself — evoking shipwreck and salvation — already presents a powerful metaphor, as if each verse were a life preserver thrown into the sea of collective memory.
Recorded in 2005 at the Officine Meccaniche in Mauro Pagani, this piece completely departed from the style of his previous album, Canzoni a manovella, released six years earlier. The official presentation took place in January 2006 at the Chiesa di San Carpoforo in Milano, a venue whose acoustics and solemnity seemed tailor-made for its grandeur. But beyond technical details, what is striking is how Vinicio Capossela managed to blend the narrative with the musical: here there is no rush, only a tide of sounds that ebb and flow like the tides of his native Irpinia, that land that shaped him so deeply that it even granted him honorary citizenship of Calitri. The album also received the Targa Tenco in 2006 for best album and ranked second on Mojo’s list of the best albums in the world that year, just behind Savane by Ali Farka Touré. It also made it onto the ranking of the 100 most beautiful Italian albums of all time according to Rolling Stone Italia, in 6th place.
