The story behind
Something So Strong, according to DoReSol
There are songs that, when you play them, transport you to a specific moment, and Something So Strong is one of them. It's a track that feels like a bright ray of sunshine, one of those compositions born from the collaboration between Neil Finn and Mitchell Froom. What makes this piece special is how it encapsulates that optimistic energy, almost like a reminder of the strength we can find in love or human connections. It was released as the fifth and final single from their self-titled debut album in 1987, and its impact was felt on the charts, reaching number 3 in New Zealand and number 7 on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
The story behind Something So Strong has an interesting detail: according to biographer Chris Bourke, it was the first song that Neil Finn conceived specifically with Crowded House in mind. However, the creation process didn't stop there; Froom and Finn worked together to polish and restructure parts of the song, which led to Mitchell Froom sharing co-writing credit. The recording took place in studios like Capitol and Sunset Sound Factory in Los Angeles, under the production of Froom. To promote the single, a music video was filmed showing the band playing in a barn, with a classic American car parked outside, a visual detail that complements that feeling of nostalgia and warmth that the music conveys.
