The story behind

She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, according to DoReSol

The first time She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore was recorded was in 1994, but it did not end up on the album Crash! Boom! Bang!. It was kept for another year, until in 1995 it appeared as the third single from Don’t Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!. It’s not just a track that slipped through by mistake: its fresh sound, with that instantly catchy chorus, made it stand out on a record full of hits. The exact duration, 4:05, gives it just the right rhythm so the chorus doesn’t feel forced, yet doesn’t drag on too long. The engineer Michael Ilbert and the producer Per Gessle gave it that clean shine that contrasts with the rawer rock of other songs on the same album.

Recorded in England, the final mix was handled by the same team that produced it: Per Gessle and Michael Ilbert. It wasn’t just any track: it had been discarded before, but when it resurfaced in 1995, it ended up being one of the year’s most-listened-to singles. The duo Roxette, already dominating charts with songs like The Look and It Must Have Been Love, proved here that even tracks nearly left on the shelf can become hits. And it wasn’t a fluke: the group had already racked up four number-ones on the Billboard in the United States, along with awards like the World Music Award and recognition at the Swedish Grammys. But in this case, the credit goes to a song that, by its very history, already had something special.
