The story behind
June Afternoon, according to DoReSol
The song June Afternoon, released in January 1996, is taken from the greatest hits compilation Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus! Roxette's Greatest Hits. It was a single that had a particular reach, released only in Europe, Australia, and Canada, but managed to reach the top position in the Czech Republic and ranked among the forty most listened-to tracks in several territories. The recording of this song took place in August 1995 at EMI Studios in Stockholm, and was produced by Clarence Öfwerman. The recorded duration is 4:15. The music video accompanying June Afternoon was directed by Jonas Åkerlund.
The composition of June Afternoon is the work of Per Gessle, who also handled the lead vocals in the verses and chorus. The main bridge part was performed by Marie Fredriksson. For the recording, musicians who had been part of Gyllene Tider, Gessle’s previous band, were brought in. As the B-side of the single, an unreleased demo titled Seduce Me was included, a piece written by Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle that was originally intended for the 1991 album Joyride. Later, Seduce Me was included in the 2006 release The Rox Box/Roxette 86-06. Critic Brendon Veevers, from the British portal Renowned for Sound, described the lyrics of June Afternoon as playful and its atmosphere as a sweet blend of "bubblegum" and sunshine.
