The story behind

See My Way, according to DoReSol

When you encounter See My Way, you notice something different in the way The Who approached this album. Unlike other works where Pete Townshend held the compositional reins almost entirely, on this album the door was opened for all members to contribute. Roger Daltrey added one track, while John Entwistle and Keith Moon each contributed two. See My Way is precisely Daltrey's contribution to this dynamic, a reflection of that pursuit for each member to leave their mark. The recording of this material took place between August and November 1966, in various London studios such as IBC, Regent, and Pye, under the production of Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp.

This album marked a turning point for the band, distancing themselves from the more R&B-focused sound of their debut. The idea of each member contributing compositions arose after an agreement for an advance payment from their manager, Chris Stamp, in exchange for each member adding two songs. Although Daltrey only wrote one, See My Way, this openness resulted in a work where authorship is shared more equitably. Curiously, this shared songwriting policy led to some of Townshend's recent hits, such as I'm a Boy and Happy Jack, being left out of the final cut. Given the novelty of songwriting for some, Townshend even helped demarcate his bandmates' demos. The album, originally titled A Quick One and released on December 9, 1966, in the UK, reached the United States in April 1967 under the name Happy Jack, with a modified tracklist.
