The story behind

Runaway, according to DoReSol

Linkin Park recorded Runaway at a time when the band had not yet settled on their definitive sound, but already revealed that mix of urgency and controlled chaos that would later define their style. The song was born as a demo in 1998 under the name Stick and Move —originally Stick N Move—, a track that appeared on a four-track cassette from the Xero project in 1996. By the time it reached Hybrid Theory, it had already undergone years of adjustments: the final version retains that raw energy, but with layers of production that give it a different weight. What stands out most is how Rob Bourdon sets the rhythm with those drum hits that seem to fall out of time, as if the beat resisted fitting together completely.

Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington take turns in the verses with an almost theatrical dynamic: one delivers sharp phrases, the other twists them with a growl that oscillates between rage and desperation. It is not just a nu metal track; it is a scream that falls apart and reassembles itself in three minutes and four seconds.
