Babasónicos kicked off the new millennium with an album that put them on the map in one fell swoop. Jessico, their sixth work, was released in 2001 just as Argentina was collapsing in December, yet the band achieved something unexpected: a sound that resonated far beyond the crises. Among the songs that defined that moment is Rubí, a track that not only stuck on the radio but also slipped into year-end best-of lists without trying too hard.The recording of Rubí lasted 3:45, but its impact on the album — and on the scene — was much longer-lasting. Jessico didn’t just take them to the top of the charts in magazines like Rolling Stone, Inrokuptibles, and the supplement Sí! from Clarín; it also won the award for “Best Latin Rock Album” according to La banda Elástica from Los Ángeles. Argentine musicians voted it the best of 2001 in a survey by the supplement NO from Página. It wasn’t just another album: it was the one that marked a before and after for the band, recorded in a country that was falling apart but where the music kept ringing loud.
