The story behind
This short and direct song captures a scene many know well: a group of friends hitting the streets with no destination, just looking to have a good time. There are no pretenses in the story, no judgments about what they do — just the urgency of living in the moment, even if it means getting into trouble. The lyrics unfold like a rough draft, unadorned but with an honesty that sounds authentic. The fast-paced rhythm and the bass driving the beat give it that air of restrained rebellion, as if the band knew fun doesn’t always end well, but it’s still worth it.
They recorded it in 2007, during the peak of their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, when they were already a phenomenon in the UK. Producer Jim Abbiss and the mixing team — Simon “Barny” Barnicott and Owen Skinner — gave it that raw yet polished sound, as if the track had come straight from a live take without filters. They weren’t aiming for perfection: they wanted the band’s energy to come through in every note, even if it meant leaving a mistake or two in plain sight. By then, Arctic Monkeys had already shown they could connect with an audience growing through the internet, something uncommon at the time. The song, clocking in at just over two minutes, works like a sketch of what was to come: tracks that sound like stories told between laughter and the occasional stumble.
