The story behind
This eight-minute twenty-second piece is not just a song: it is a journey that begins with a saxophone whisper and ends with a chorus that seems to expand endlessly. Re Run does not follow the typical path of jazz tracks; instead, it weaves layers of improvisation over a rhythmic foundation that repeats with subtle variations, as if each return to the same measure brought something new. It is not a piece meant to be listened to in one sitting: it demands attention, but rewards with a sense of perpetual motion, as if time itself stretched to make room for each note.
They recorded it in a frenetic week, with seven engineers taking turns in the studio to capture every nuance. Kamasi Washington not only composed the main melody but also arranged and produced the track, aiming for a sound that felt both traditional and futuristic. The result was an album that, upon its release in May 2015, received near-universal acclaim: on Metacritic, for example, it earned a score of 83 out of 100, a number that reflects an unusual critical consensus. They did not set out to sound like anyone else, yet they ended up defining an era.
