The story behind
In Pulling Teeth, Green Day delves into a raw narrative with a touch of dark humor. The lyrics focus on the perspective of a man trapped in an abusive relationship, unable to break free from his situation. This story, with its underlying darkness, was born from a peculiar incident: during a pillow fight with his then-partner, bassist Mike Dirnt, he hit his head turning a corner and ended up injuring both his elbows. The song, with a duration of 2:31, captures that tension and hopelessness in a very particular way.
This track is part of the band's third studio album and their major label debut, Dookie, released on February 1, 1994. The recording took place in 1993 at Fantasy Studios, located in Berkeley, California. Billie Joe Armstrong, the singer and guitarist, was the main lyricist, drawing on his personal experiences to explore themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. For the production, Green Day collaborated for the first time with Rob Cavallo, who also participated in the mixing alongside Jerry Finn. The recording engineers were Neill King and Casey McCrankin. The album, and by extension this song, marked a shift towards a more melodic and energetic rock sound, distancing itself from the predominance of grunge.
