The story behind
When brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb moved from England to Australia in the late 1950s, they already carried with them the seed of what would become a decades-long music career. Born on the Isle of Man and having spent their early years in Manchester, the Gibb family settled in Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia. It was there, after achieving their first Australian chart success with Spicks and Specks, that they decided to return to the United Kingdom. Upon arriving in January 1967, producer Robert Stigwood began to propel them towards a global audience.
The distinctive sound of the Bee Gees was built on tight, easily recognizable vocal harmonies. In their early days, Robin's vibrato-laden voice was a signature trait, while Barry's R&B-influenced falsetto solidified as his personal hallmark towards the late seventies and into the eighties. The brothers not only performed their own compositions but also created and produced hits for other artists. Their career spanned two notable peaks of success: one as a pop act in the late sixties and early seventies, and another as protagonists of the disco era in the late seventies. Their total sales are estimated to exceed 220 million records.
