The story behind

New York Mining Disaster 1941, according to DoReSol

The story behind New York Mining Disaster 1941 is as peculiar as its sound. The lyrics, written by Barry and Robin Gibb, narrate the desolate wait of miners trapped after a collapse, one of them sharing a photo of his wife with a colleague named "Mr. Jones". It is said that the main inspiration came from the Aberfan tragedy in October 1966, although Robin mentioned that a real mining disaster had occurred in New York in 1939, and that the city's name seemed more "glamorous" to him. The song's structure seeks to reflect the slowness of life as it fades, with the verses becoming more paused and the drums intensifying in the second chorus. A distinctive sonic detail is the way Barry approaches the A minor chord. He used an open D tuning, inherited from a neighbor who had lived in Hawaii, which created a unique sonic blend with Maurice's conventional tuning, something many tried to replicate without success.

This track marked a milestone for the Bee Gees. It was their first single released internationally on April 14, 1967, and the first to reach popularity charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States, after a moderately successful attempt with their Australian single Spicks and Specks. The recording of New York Mining Disaster 1941 took place in March 1967, with Ossie Byrne as producer and Robert Stigwood as executive producer. It was also the first time that Australian drummer Colin Petersen appeared as an official member of the band. The song was included as the first track on side two of the group's international debut album, Bee Gees' 1st. The Gibb brothers moved from Australia to England in January 1967, and after signing with the Robert Stigwood Organisation on February 24, they began working on this material.
