The story behind
The song Pigeon Song, with its duration of 2 minutes and 18 seconds, is a piece found within the first studio album by the band America. This album, originally released in January 1972, had a particular history. Initially, it did not include the track A Horse with No Name, which had appeared as a single in Europe in late 1971. However, when A Horse with No Name became a global hit in early 1972, the album was reissued that same month to incorporate this track that would define their sound.
The debut album by America reached the top of the Billboard charts in the United States, remaining there for five weeks. Two standout singles emerged from this work: A Horse with No Name, which led the Billboard singles chart for three weeks in 1972, and I Need You, which reached ninth position. Additionally, other songs like Sandman and Three Roses were frequently played on FM radio. The recording of this album featured the engineering of Ken Scott, while the production was handled by America, Jeff Dexter, and Ian Samwell. The band America was formed in 1970 in London, composed of Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peek, sons of American military personnel. Their style was inspired by the Californian folk-rock of bands like The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
