The story behind
Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..., according to DoReSol
The song Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But... sounds like a heart-to-heart among friends, where irony and frustration blend with a rhythm that moves forward without haste but without pause. The lyrics, direct and colloquial, play with the idea of those acquaintances who watch from afar with skepticism, as if the band’s success were merely a passing whim. Alex Turner doesn’t bother to hide it: he speaks of those who questioned his effort ("How much did they pay you for that?"), but also of the determination to play anywhere, even in working-class clubs on Saturday nights. The title, with that awkward pause before the "but," makes it clear that one shouldn’t take others’ doubts too seriously.
The recording captures that raw energy that was already the band’s trademark in their early days. Simon “Barny” Barnicott and Owen Skinner handled the mixing, while Jim Abbiss, the producer, ensured the sound retained that sense of immediacy, as if the song had been captured during an impromptu rehearsal. It’s no coincidence that the track is part of Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, the album that in 2007 earned them the Brit Award for Best British Album and cemented them as an unexpected phenomenon. The band, born in Sheffield, had started as a group of kids playing simply for the love of it, with no commercial ambitions. Recognition came quickly, but their essence — that mix of boldness and authenticity — was never lost.
