The story behind
The Crickets recorded Peggy Sue at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico, between June 29 and July 1, 1957. The song was released as a single in September of that year, accompanied by Everyday on the B-side. It was published by Coral under catalog number 9-61885.
The original idea was to call it Cindy Lou, but the name changed after Jerry Allison, the drummer, asked Buddy Holly to rename it in honor of his girlfriend, Peggy Sue Gerron. The drum recording was difficult, and the producer warned that if he didn't do it well, they would have to call it Cindy Lou again. The next take worked.
The song has a lively drumbeat, Holly's voice with a distinctive tone, and a chord structure that was quite advanced for the time. Later, Buddy Holly recorded a version of Peggy Sue Got Married, a sequel, in his apartment in New York in December 1958. That recording was found after his death and was edited with background vocals and an electric guitar.
