The story behind

True Love Ways, according to DoReSol

The Crickets recorded "True Love Ways" in October 1958, in a New York studio. The song was released as a single in March 1960, within a posthumous album of Buddy Holly. The original version was done with the Dick Jacobs Orchestra, and was included in The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. 2.

In 1965, Peter and Gordon covered it and turned it into an international hit. It reached number 2 in the UK and number 14 in the US. The song was also performed by other artists such as Mickey Gilley and Cliff Richard, who took it to different charts.

In the original recording, you can hear Buddy Holly preparing: he says "Yeah, we're rolling", then the pianist and saxophonist play a bit, Holly murmurs "Okay", clears his throat, and the producer tells him "Quiet, boys!" before starting. The melody is based on a gospel song that Holly liked, and the lyrics were written by Norman Petty. Buddy Holly's wife, Maria Elena, confirmed that it was a wedding gift.
