The story behind

When you encounter Parallel Universe, you notice that the Red Hot Chili Peppers move away from their most well-known sound. Unlike other songs where Flea's bass usually takes center stage with his funk lines, here the energy is channeled differently. John Frusciante's guitar has a more pronounced distortion, creating a denser atmosphere, and Anthony Kiedis's voice is more restrained in the verses, aiming for an introspective melody that contrasts with the band's more energetic reputation. An interesting detail is that, unlike most tracks on Californication, this song does not include backing vocals. This piece, which is part of the album Californication recorded in 1999, was released as a promotional single in 2001. Although it did not have a physical release, it managed to enter the Modern Rock Tracks charts in the United States. Despite being a promotional release, Parallel Universe became a recurring song in the group's concerts. Since its first performance in 1998, it has been played over 330 times, making it one of their most frequently performed live. During the By the Way tour, it was common for the band to introduce a fragment of Fugazi's Latest Disgrace before starting it. The production was handled by Rick Rubin, and the recording and mixing engineering was carried out by Jim Scott.
