The story behind
When Quincy Jones heard the initial idea for P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), it wasn't so much the melody that captured his attention, but the title. The inspiration came from his then-wife, Peggy Lipton, who showed him lingerie with the phrase "pretty young thing" embroidered on it. From there, Jones commissioned several songwriters to create a song around that idea. A first demo, co-written and recorded by Michael Jackson with Greg Phillinganes, was presented to Jones. However, Michael Jackson recalled that this mid-tempo version wasn't what Quincy Jones was looking for; he wanted something faster. It was when James Ingram presented his own demo that Jones felt he had found the right direction.
James Ingram finished polishing the lyrics and structure of the song, with Quincy Jones suggesting extending the bridge and adding a chant section, which earned Jones a co-writing credit. Michael Jackson was delighted with the final result, highlighting the playfulness of the lyrics and the use of made-up words like "tenderoni," which gave it a fun and lighthearted feel. For the recording of Michael Jackson's lead vocals, sound engineer Bruce Swedien opted for a Shure SM7 microphone, an uncommon choice in studios but more common in radio. To enrich the backing vocals, Swedien recorded Jackson at different distances from the microphone, thus creating a denser sound. Interestingly, the vocals for the "P.Y.T.s" were performed by Michael Jackson's sisters, Janet Jackson and La Toya Jackson, who added the "na na na" vocal parts towards the end of the track. The song, with a tempo of 126 beats per minute, became one of Michael Jackson's fastest.
Released on September 19, 1983, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) became the sixth single released from the album Thriller. It reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and number 46 on the Hot Black Singles chart, solidifying Thriller as an album with multiple hits. In the United Kingdom, the song reached number 11 on the charts. Its greatest commercial success came in Belgium, where it positioned itself within the top 10, reaching number 6. The track also had a presence in other markets, reaching number 14 in the Netherlands, 24 in Canada, and 51 in Germany. The single was recorded at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles between April and November 1982, and was released under the Epic Records label.
