The story behind
This song doesn't sound like the rest of Ovunque proteggi. It's not just because of the mysterious air it carries from the first piano chord, but because in those six minutes or so there's something that doesn't repeat on the album: a melody that lingers in the ear like a spell and lyrics that seem written in code. It's not the shortest song on the album, but it's one of those that occupies the most space in your head. Recorded at the Officine Meccaniche studios in Mauro Pagani's hands during 2005, it sounds like a place where time stretches, as if each note had to breathe before moving on. Its official presentation in January 2006 at the Chiesa di San Carpoforo in Milan made it clear that this wasn't just any album: six years after Canzoni a manovella, the leap was radical.
The song was born at a time when Vinicio Capossela was no longer just a cult artist in the underground circuits of Emilia and Romagna, but someone who had found in his homeland, Irpinia, an emotional landscape that marked him forever. The song was recorded in a borrowed studio, between walls that had probably seen countless sound experiments pass through, and it emerged with a texture unlike anything he'd done before. It's no surprise that Rolling Stone Italia included it among the hundred most important Italian albums of all time: in its six minutes and fifteen seconds, an atmosphere unfolds that never runs dry. The Targa Tenco for Best Album in 2006 and the second place on Mojo's 2007 list, behind Savane by Ali Farka Touré, only confirmed what many already sensed: here was something that didn't fit the molds of the time.
