The story behind
Overs, according to DoReSol
When you immerse yourself in listening to Overs, you notice that the lyrics move away from usual rhyme structures. Paul Simon's composition explores the idea of an older couple beginning to feel the weight of time together, a contrast to the belief in ideal love he had previously addressed in For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her. It has even been speculated that the song may have been intended for the film The Graduate, reflecting the coldness in a relationship. The initial sound, with the striking of a match and the inhalation of a cigarette, adds an intimate and reflective atmosphere, almost as if we were eavesdropping on a private moment. Musically, Overs is distinguished by greater freedom, departing from the more conventional rock and folk patterns, incorporating a broader chord palette and a looser form, approaching a style with jazz influences.
