The story behind

America, according to DoReSol

The song America by Simon & Garfunkel takes us on a sonic journey that evokes images of a United States on the move, a country seeking itself in both its geography and its essence. The lyrics narrate the story of a young couple who embark on a journey, hitchhiking in search of that ideal called "America." It is a quest that goes beyond a physical destination; it is also the exploration of a feeling, of identity, and of the promises a nation can represent. The composition is fueled by a personal experience of Paul Simon, who in 1964 traveled across the country with his then-partner, Kathy Chitty. This five-day trip, which included passing through Saginaw, Michigan, became the seed of this piece, capturing the sense of adventure and the hope of finding something meaningful along the way.

Recorded at Columbia Studio in New York in February 1968, America was part of the conceptual album _Bookends_, released in April of the same year. The production was handled by the duo along with Roy Halee. Interestingly, the song had a peculiar journey as a single. Initially released as the B-side of the track _For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her_ in 1972, to promote the compilation _Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits_, its popularity led to the roles being reversed, becoming the A-side and returning to the charts in November of that same year. The song's sound combines the warmth of acoustic guitars with arrangements that include a soprano saxophone and an organ, creating an atmosphere that some have described as an echo of classic American pop. The lyrical structure, written in free verse, accompanies this feeling of fluidity and exploration.
