The story behind
Bookends Theme (instrumental), according to DoReSol
The instrumental piece from *Bookends* is a sonic moment that evokes a journey, almost as if the notes themselves were weaving the threads of a complete life. It feels as if each chord were marking a stage, from the early years to maturity, functioning as a frame that encloses human experience. The way it unfolds, with that sense of progression and reflection, is what gives the album its title and makes it so particular. It is a theme that, without words, manages to convey the idea of a life cycle, a journey that spans from youth to old age.
This theme was conceived during the creation of the fourth studio album by the American duo Simon & Garfunkel. The album, released on April 3, 1968, in the United States under the Columbia Records label, was produced by Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, and Roy Halee. The duo had already gained recognition two years prior with works such as *Sounds of Silence* and *Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme*, in addition to the soundtrack for the 1967 film *The Graduate*. *Bookends* was conceived as a conceptual album, where the first side explores the different phases of life, using this theme as a common thread that links the extremes. The second part of the record, on the other hand, included previously released singles and material that was not used for the soundtrack of *The Graduate*. Simon's lyrics on the album address themes such as youth, disillusionment, relationships, old age, and mortality, creating a sonic tapestry that complements the introspective atmosphere of the instrumental compositions.
