The story behind
Our Song, according to DoReSol
The song Our Song, from the album 90125 by Yes, stands out for its lyrics that evoke geographical imagery and cultural references. It explicitly mentions the city of Toledo, Ohio, describing it as a point on the path of the "good king" and the "silver city." This reference is not coincidental; according to Alan White, the band's drummer, a performance at the Toledo Sports Arena in 1977 was particularly memorable due to the extreme temperatures recorded, reaching 52°C. As a result of this connection, Our Song saw notable airplay in Toledo following the album's release. The song also nods to the piece "Rule, Britannia!," adding a layer of historical allusion to its content.
This track was conceived by all members of Yes at the time: Jon Anderson on vocals, Trevor Rabin contributing guitars and keyboards, Chris Squire on bass, Alan White on drums, and Tony Kaye on keyboards. The production was handled by Trevor Horn, while recording engineering was overseen by Gary Langan. Released on October 28, 1983, Our Song was included on 90125, the band's eleventh studio album. This record marked the return of Jon Anderson and Tony Kaye, and signified the addition of guitarist Trevor Rabin. The album, released by Atco Records, received a major boost thanks to the success of the single "Owner of a Lonely Heart," which topped the U.S. charts and led 90125 to achieve triple platinum certification in the country. Our Song, clocking in at 4:18, was also released as the B-side of the hit single "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and reached number 32 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart in 1983.
