The story behind
Missa agrária / Carcará, according to DoReSol
The song Missa Agrária / Carcará, performed by Maria Bethânia, presents us with a piece that, despite its short duration of 3:10, encapsulates a particular strength. The title itself suggests a duality, uniting the sacred with the earthly, which is reflected in the intensity of her performance.
This piece is part of the artist's debut album, originally released in June 1965 under the RCA Victor label. At that time, it was presented in LP format and in a mono version. Later, in 1971, the record had a new stereo edition through RCA Camden, and in 1996, a remastered CD version was released by Sony BMG. The career of Maria Bethânia, born as Maria Bethânia Vianna Telles Velloso in Santo Amaro, Bahia, began in 1964 with her participation in the Opinião concert in Rio de Janeiro. It was precisely with the single Carcará, in 1965, that she achieved great popularity throughout Brazil. Coming from a family with a strong artistic tradition, she is the sister of singer-songwriters Caetano Veloso and Mabel Velloso.
