The story behind
Milonga del moro judío, according to DoReSol
The Milonga del moro judío, a piece that is part of Jorge Drexler's album Eco, invites us to immerse ourselves in a story lasting 3 minutes and 54 seconds. This composition is distinguished by the way Drexler intertwines the tradition of the milonga with more contemporary sound elements, creating a particular auditory landscape. The album Eco, released in 2004, is characterized by integrating acoustic writing with electronic touches, paying special attention to lyrical details and string arrangements, and this song is a clear example of that sonic exploration. The recording of Eco took place mainly in Uruguay, at Sondor Studios, and featured the production of Juan Campodónico, who collaborated with Carlos Casacuberta and Jorge Drexler himself on co-production.
The mixing was handled by Julio Berta, Pablo García, and Javi Varela. This album is considered a turning point in Drexler's career, helping to expand his recognition in Latin America and Spain. Following the success of Al otro lado del río, which earned him an Academy Award, the album was re-released as Eco², including that award-winning song and an additional DVD. Before this work, Drexler had already participated in contests for unpublished songs in Montevideo in 1991, sharing a cassette with other artists under the Sondor label, and had released his first album, La luz que sabe robar, in 1992 with the Ayuí / Tacuabé label.
