The story behind

Mala gente, according to DoReSol

Juanes doesn't usually sing about heartbreak with half-measures. In Mala gente, however, he does so with a clarity that stings: the song is a direct stab at someone who, according to him, plays with other people's feelings. The track begins with a rhythm that seems to walk in circles, as if the narrator were going over the same idea again and again. The lyrics leave no room for doubt: she told him she wanted to be his friend after they broke up, but he knows it's a lie. There are no generic reproaches here, just the certainty that whoever leaves like that, sooner or later, will hurt again. The song was released in May 2002 as the third single from Un día normal, the album that catapulted him beyond Colombia.

He recorded it that same year, with Gustavo Santaolalla at the helm of production—a detail that explains why it sounds so organic: there are no artificial filters, just an acoustic guitar blending with percussion that evokes his native Medellín. It lasted three minutes and sixteen seconds, but in that time it condensed a story many recognized instantly. The technical detail that stands out the most is its structure: the chorus doesn't arrive until after a minute and a half, as if the artist wanted the listener to first feel the weight of every word before delivering the emotional punch. That, combined with its blend of Latin rock and catchy melody, ensured the song stuck in the radios of Latin America, Spain, and even Mexico.

It wasn't a coincidence, then, that the following year it won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
