The story behind
When Al Bano and Romina Power took the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest 1985, it wasn't the first time they had represented Italy in the competition. They had already participated in 1976 with a song that resonated quite a bit, and on this occasion, they returned with Magic Oh Magic. The event took place in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the Scandinavium, a venue that had opened its doors in 1971 and, for the occasion, adapted its capacity to accommodate around 8,000 spectators, a considerable number for the festival's history up to that point. The contest was organized by the European Broadcasting Union and Swedish television, Sveriges Television, who were responsible for the production following Sweden's victory in the previous edition with Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley.
The participation of Al Bano and Romina Power in Eurovision 1985 occurred in a context where many artists already had a history in the festival. For example, Hanne Krogh, who represented Norway with Bobbysocks and emerged as the winner, had already been there in 1971. Elisabeth Andreasson, Hanne Krogh's partner in Bobbysocks, had competed for Sweden in 1982. Even Ireen Sheer, representing Luxembourg, had participated twice before, once for Luxembourg in 1974 and another for Germany in 1978. In total, nineteen countries took part that year, with the return of Greece and Israel after a year's absence. The song Magic Oh Magic, with an approximate duration of 3 minutes and 38 seconds, was added to the list of songs that this Italian duo, formed in 1975, presented throughout their career, which included hits in several languages and tours across Europe and Latin America.
